Notes

This is Tiny Scarecrow, the frenetic and angsty puppet character from the PBS show “The Biscuit Brothers”. Full permission has been obtained from the show to produce this work, and the pattern is now available.

Previous notes:

I have just received permission from the director of a children’s show (who also voices this character) to attempt to replicate this character in knit form and eventually share the pattern publicly for free.

Apparently some of the cast are lining up to get one as well, so I may have to knit multiples! Very exciting!

eta Nov 9: I’ve charted out the head (always best to start with the most recognizable part of any character) and will begin knitting it tonight. Planning to do it in the round incorporating eyes and nose as intarsia short rows so they’ll pop out from the face on their own.

eta Nov 11: halfway through the head, going okay so far. Plus the director/producer/voice artist just sent me some pictures of the puppet so I can do better detail on the clothes. He also confirmed that the character doesn’t have ears! I was partway through the head when I realized I hadn’t allowed for ears, but checked the DVD and couldn’t see any. He doesn’t have any, go figure!

eta Nov 13: Didn’t like how the head was turning out with the combo of stranding and short rows. The floats were getting in the way, so much as I’d like to have done it in the round, I’m now doing it flat. Also redid the original measurements to get the eyes a better shape. It’s much more complicated to write it out as flat because I have to remember to write some rows as purls, which gets a bit confusing in the short rows. But I think it’ll be okay in the end.

eta Nov 17: Okay, the eyes and nose worked out quite nicely, but sort of took over the head in terms of size. But I like them that size, so I’m now redoing it again, this time with a bigger head. And at least I won’t have to write out the directions for the eyes and nose again, just the parts around them. Oi.

eta Dec 3: I’ve got a head finished, although I might end up making yet another to add some more stitches in places where stuffing erased definition too much. But it’s enough to go on to proceed to the hair, hat, and body parts. Until I put the interior of the mouth in, it kind of looked like a bright orange fetish mask sitting on my chair…kinda freaky.

eta Dec 28: Had to remake the head, the last one just wasn’t right. Finally, this one is recognizable as the character. Now working on the body.

eta Jan 11: Body done, whoa this thing is turning out wayyyy bigger than originally planned!

eta Jan 20: Took three attempts to get the hair right, but it’s done now, so I’m going to work on finishing the head over the next day or so, then the arms, and then I can make his sweater/jacket.

eta Feb 2: Done both hands. It’s no easy feat to make them both curve inward properly so it took some restarts. On to the feet next!

eta Feb 8: Done both feet. Started arm tonight.

eta Mar 5: Had to take a couple of weeks off to do the cake show (OMG I won first in my division!), now back to it. Working on the jacket now and having trouble getting a nice, non-curling edge. Yeah yeah, stockinette, I know. But this one is particularly finicky, and I don’t know why. Gahh.

eta Apr 1: Almost done the jacket now, just the collar to be done. Then two more cords for the gloves, then some patches, then all done. Hopefully by the end of the weekend…then I have to type up the pattern…

eta Apr 5: Done! Now to gather the notes, type up the pattern, take photos, etc….all coming soon!

eta Apr 16: Whoops, forgot about his pink chest patch and about his neck cord. I’ve added them now and will do more pics another time.
