I’m knitting this with a yarn that’s machine washable and dryable. This is a requirement for any hand knits made for my father-in-law. I’m using a slightly larger needle this time because his neck is wider than average.

He’s a career US Navy man named “Royal”. Hence the chosen color. He’s a sweetie pie who’ll be celebrating his 90th birthday on 2/26/2020.

Provisionally cast on 110 sts. This is the first time I knit 5 lace sections. Decreased in only 3 of the stockinette sections because Royal’s neck is wider than average. Used almost the entire ball of yarn, so this one is extra cozy. The yarn is extremely soft, so perfect for a cowl. I just hope it doesn’t pill too much.

When I knit this for men, I omit the picot at bottom and top edges. Instead, I did all purl sts for the turning round. It makes nice, straight edges. I think the picot edge in the pattern looks a bit feminine for men.

The circumference of this cowl at the bottom is approximately 29”. The top circumference on this one is about 23”. So it tapers in very gradually toward the top.

I absolutely love the design of this cowl. It’s so warm, comfy and quick to knit. I wonder how many more of these will fly off my needles?
