Notes

I only used the lace stitch pattern from the pattern in the book. The rest was calculated for the recipient and constructed toe-up with a moccasin toe and afterthought heel.

Circumference around widest part of foot: 10”
Length: 9.5”
Above ankle must be loose: 10.(2)5”+
Recipient would like these socks to fit into shoes, so I will knit them at a relatively tight gauge.

Gauge with 2.25mm before blocking: 17.5 sts/2” in lace pattern
Gauge after warm-water blocking: 18.5 sts/2”

These are original toe-up socks based on techniques in Donna Druchunas’s Craftsy class of the same name. Moccasin toe, afterthought heel.

Foot circ/toe of sock is to be 10”. With 10% negative ease, that’ll be 9”. At post-blocking gauge, that’s 83.25 sts. I worked the foot with 84 sts (works with the 4-st rep of the lace patt st).

Above the ankle measurement is 10.5”. I’ll aim for about 11” (0.5” positive ease) as the recipient said it must be loose there. So:
After creating the opening for the heel with waste yarn (which I’m doing on rnd 3 of the 14th rep of the st patt), I’ll switch to 2.5 mm needle on the row where I’m working back over the waste yarn sts. I’ll also inc 12 sts (up to 96 sts) over 2 rows of plain St st on the back as instructed in the Craftsy class. So, start the incs on the row after the row where I work back across the waste yarn and switch to 2.5 mm.
1st inc row (on sole/back of leg sts): k1, (m1, k8) x 5, m1, k1.
2nd inc row (staggering the incs): k5, m1, k9, m1, k8, m1, k4, m1, k9, m1, k9, m1, k5.
Then work across top of foot (row 6 of st patt) and then start st patt across back of leg, continuing onto the front. Round now begins on other side of leg.

Moccasin toe (as described in Donna Druchunas’s Craftsy class Knit Original Toe-Up Socks): Using 2mm needle and provisional CO, I CO’d 8 sts (instead of 6 as in the Craftsy class) and worked 10 rows of St st (instead of 8) before removing the provisional CO and picking up 8 sts along the side.

Foot: When I finished the toe (reached 84 sts), I worked the foot with 2.25mm. First rnd onto 2.25mm: K5, (PM), work lace st patt 10 times, k tbl (to have a line of twisted sts on both sides of the pattern on the top of the foot), k rest of rnd.

Afterthought heel: When I get to 2” (? confirm) shorter than the length of the foot, I’ll knit the sole sts onto waste yarn (I will not twist the last k st as I had been doing on the foot), knit back, switch to 2.5 mm and knit a couple of rounds plain on the back (don’t start pattern yet) while increasing to 96 sts over the two plain rounds, and then start working the pattern all the way around the leg.

Cuff: idea for gift socks, but not enough yarn this time: Work a long ribbed cuff so the recipient can fold it over for a shorter sock if desired.

Bind off: Icelandic/Russian stretchy BO as demonstrated in the Craftsy class Knit Original Toe-Up Socks.
