Knitting in the round, so have added 5 stitches to body for steeking.
I found out, having completed the body and one of the sleeves, that when the designer says “knit back and forth” in the pattern, she means “knit (x number of rows) in garter stitch”. Since I misunderstood this instruction, I knitted the very top of the yoke with 11 rows of stocking stitch, not garter. Rather than undo the entire garment, I picked up stitches all around the neck and knit on another 11 rows of garter before going on to pick up and knit the button bands in garter.
I don’t think that the facing instructions in the pattern are necessary unless the garment is knit in the round, in which case they cover the steeks. I spun a slightly finer 2-ply yarn in the same colour as the 3-ply I spun for the main body of the garment, and used this finer yarn to knit the facings to reduce bulk. I used a singles yarn in the same colour as thread for sewing down the facings and the hem. This pattern has been great for developing my finishing skills and was really fun to knit.
I think that despite getting gauge a medium size is going to be quite big, but will continue anyway - it’ll be roomy to put other things underneath!
Finished. I LOVE this cardigan! So much that I broke my 20-year ban on sewing and made a skirt to go with it.
