I used a worsted yarn, 100% acrylic, on a Brother knitting machine (standard gauge - 6).

rib stitch 1/1: main bed carriage tension 10 - ribber tension in 8.

stockinette tension 10, alternating one needle in work position and one needle off (because of the worsted yarn, too thick for my knitting machine).

select 80+81 needles and work in rib stitch 1/1 with the main carriage’s tension in 10 and the ribber’s carriage in tension 8.
for 18 rows.
set the rowcounter to 0.

then pass all the stitches from the ribber to the main bed, to the needles in work position only: knit the stockinette as if you should knit a mock rib stitch.
use tension 10.
for 60 rows.

then knit some rows with waste yarn, take off and sew the hat beginning at the shorter edge (mattress stitch). Then close the top of the hat, with the invisible knit stitch, throwing away the waste yarn.
