Notes

Imagine my surprise when, while digging through the eclectic mix of yarn skeins in the bins at Big Lots, I came across this one lonely ball of Patons Kroy Socks for the bargain price of $1! :) I would have been happier had there been 2, but such is life.

I decided to make a pair of short socks for myself, dividing the skein into two equal balls, starting at the toe, and just knitting until I ran out of yarn. Based on socks I’ve made in fingering weight in the past I figured that I would have enough to have 2 or 3 inches above the heel before reaching the end of my yarn (even though my 50 gram ball was, in reality, only 47 grams…). I was wrong. I should have looked at the yardage. It turns out that this yarn is a little thicker than what I’m accustomed to using, and therefore has what turns out to be significantly less yardage. (Oddly enough, this did not appear to have any appreciable impact on my gauge.) By the time I got close to starting the heel I knew I had no where near enough yarn to finish. I managed to find a suitable coordinating/contrasting color in my stash to use for the heel and to add the needed extra length at the cuff, so all’s well that ends well. Had I realized from the beginning how short I was going to be I would have used the contrasting color for the toe as well.

These socks were knit on a 40” US size 2 circular needle, two at a time using Magic Loop. I used a US size 3 dpn to bind off. I used a Turkish Cast On for the toe.
