Notes

I used this basic sock pattern as the basis for my socks and inserted a lace stitch pattern into the instep and the leg portions of the socks, finishing with a picot hem cuff. After perusing all 4 of Barbara Walker’s Treasuries books the lace pattern that I chose to use is Fountains Panel from Lace & Eyelets: 250 Stitches to Knit edited by Erika Knight and published by Interweave Press.

I cast on 20 stitches to start for a slightly more rounded toe, using a Turkish cast-on instead of Judy’s Magic Cast-on and worked them two at a time using Magic Loop.

I used two full skeins to make these socks. While I had exactly the right amount of yarn to finish one of the socks, I had to snag about a yard from another skein to finish binding off the last 6 stitches and seam the cuff on the other. The extra yard is from a different colorway, but it’s on the inside of the cuff so it will never be seen.

The Serenity Garden yarn is very pretty and soft, but it has absolutely no stretch. In fact, while I was knitting it I actually did a double check of the label to make sure it wasn’t cotton because it knits very much like cotton, which means that the decreases were extraordinarily difficult to execute. The (yo, k2tog) picot round very nearly killed me. The zero-stretch factor also makes the socks a little bit more difficult to put on and take off, even though once on they are a perfect fit.

I love these lacy socks and will probably knit them again, but not with this yarn. I’ll stick with wool and wool blends.
