Full instructions for this stitch pattern will appear at Cut Out & Keep. I’ll update here.

The star stitches of the 1800’s were crocheted in wool yarns, even the lacy stars, so I suspect they originated in a northern climate. The earliest star stitch pattern I found is in Norwegian.

Meanwhile, love knots were always crocheted with very fine cotton or silk thread--from a southern climate perhaps? (I suspect it was inspired by macramΓ©.)

It took some figuring for me to get love knots and star stitches to settle in comfortably with each other in a stable, versatile stitch pattern. This one is a multiple of 4 + 3, and it’s a surprise bonus that a symmetrical number of row repeats results in a square block. In fact I’d like to see what it looks like if I add a simple border.

I’ve also added photos of the earliest swatches I tried in May 2014.
