Batik Parang is one of the most famous batik motif from Indonesia. Parang means knife or dagger, symbolizing power and justice. It was once used exclusively by the royal courts of Central Java.

As the name suggests, this wimple is shaped by short rows: at the lower edge after the lace border, and at the upper edge just before the eyelet border. When folded it shapes like a trapezoid.

I’ve been fascinated with knitted wimples since I saw a pair of them designed by Priscilla Gibson-Roberts in Melanie Falick’s book America Knits and then another of hers in Lace Style. I tried to design a more fitting version, and this is my first one (of many to come, hopefully) that will fit snuggly on your head.

Telon (from the Javanese word ‘telu’ which means ‘three’) and Mio were made from this basic cat scarf pattern, and then I did the fur pattern in intarsia.

Belang (means bicolor/piebald in Indonesian) is intended to be used as a neck pillow that can give you the feeling of cuddling with a cat on your neck. The flexibility of this pattern will let you decide where you want the cat’s head to be facing.

Jingga (means “orange” in Indonesian) was knitted in self-striping yarn to resemble the tabby pattern. To achieve a smooth stripe pattern and minimize seam, the main body was knitted one-piece in the round from the back right leg to the snout.

This pattern is for a very small kitten. You can change the size by changing the yarn weight and needles. However the body proportion is more suitable for a kitten (short body length).

Nuvo was inspired by my best friend’s cat. It was knitted with self-striping sock yarn to resemble the tabby pattern. To achieve a smooth stripe pattern and minimize seam, the main body was knitted one-piece in the round from the back right leg to the top of the head.
