The myth of Arachne is well known to many a fiber artist: a mortal weaver, Arachne, boasts that her skill at the
loom is greater than that of the goddess Minerva, who upon hearing this, challenges her to a contest. Arahne’s
tapestry was so great, and the subject matter so inflammatory to Minerva that the goddess destroys the tapestry,
and turns proud Arachne into a spider.
Arachne’s Veil with its pattern reminiscent of spiders on their web is a fitting homage to one of the world’s best
fiber artists, struck down by the jealous goddess.
