The Music
Somewhere Beyond the Sea, a poem by Thomas Love Peacock, was set to music and has been recorded by many artists - most famously, perhaps, The Sandpipers in 1966. The lyrics, in part, say:

“Somewhere beyond the sea
Somewhere waiting for me
My lover stands on golden sands
And watches the ships that go sailin’ ”

And so we embark on our ocean adventure! Grab your snorkel, don your mer-person costume and get ready for a most wondrous adventure! Jump right in ~ the water’s fine!

This stunning circular cable and lace shawl is worked from the centre outward.

  • Both charts and written directions for charts are provided.
  • The pattern uses a Faux Crochet Bind Off (done with knitting needles) -- it’s really very clever!

Yarn

  • One 170g-ball Kauni Wool 8/2 Effektgarn EQ (Spectrum) (100% wool; 744yds / 680m per 170g) and
  • 1290 yds / 1179m (3 skeins) Briggs & Little Sport (100% Wool; 430 yds / 393 m per 115g) in Mulberry

Alternate Yarn Choices

  • The required amount in a solid colour would work well.
  • Not recommended for variegated or short-colour repeat yarns.
  • Other long colour gradients would work in place of the Kauni. For the second colour, choose a solid colour that blends into the last colour of the gradient.

What to download
This pattern was originally designed for a Mystery KAL held in the Impeccable Knitters Gathering Place group. Now that the Mystery KAL is over, the full pattern has been released.

  • For the full pattern with pictures, download the v2.0 files (pattern with charts and, if desired, the separate PDF for Written Directions for Charts).
  • The original Mystery KAL format is still available if you’d like to follow it (download the Getting Ready document followed by Clues 1 - 8. These files contain both charts and written directions.) The Clues contain no spoiler pictures.

Here is a link to the original Beyond the Sea Mystery KAL thread.
