Experience the lusciousness of syncopated brioche in this dramatically colorful jacket. DK and worsted weight yarns compose the modular fabric. Start with the back brioche section and then pick up stitches for the marled short row shoulders and ribbed sleeves. The front panels and collar are picked up and knit so you don’t have to seam any sections together. The brioche sections feature a main color striped with accent pops every two rows, a great color popportunity to eat up those leftover bits of yarn! The sleeves and front panels are customizable so you can adjust the length to suit your proportions. Flip the garment upside down Westknits style for an extra fashionable flair!

Sizes
One Size with a short/long sleeve length option and a short jacket / long coat option.

Sample shown on a 42” / 107cm chest circumference.
The garment size is intended for a 38-54” / 97-137cm chest circumference given the recommended gauge (15 sts = 4” / 10cm in two-color brioche stitch). The style is meant to fit as a loose drapey layer.

For a larger size (55-63” / 140-160cm chest circumference), I recommend aiming for a gauge of 13 sts = 4” / 10cm in two-color brioche with worsted or aran weight yarn. This will yield an approximate back width of 31” / 79cm.

For a smaller size (28-37” / 71-94cm), I recommend aiming for a gauge of approximately 19 sts = 4” / 10cm in two-color brioche with DK weight yarn. This will yield an approximate back width of 21” / 53cm and the jacket will still have an oversized drapey fit, but the proportions will not be too overwhelming.

You can decide the sleeve and body length as you knit.

Finished Measurements
26” / 66cm back width
Larger numbers inside the parentheses indicate the length of the long coat version.
26 (42)” / 66 (107)cm back length measured along the entire brioche section from CO to BO.
13” / 33cm front length measured from side to center
4” / 10cm collar length measured from the back
20” / 51cm sleeve circumference
Short sleeves - 9” / 23cm long
Long sleeves - 19” / 48cm long

I recommend knitting the short sleeves unless you are very tall and want the long dramatic sleeve length.
The front length is customizable so you can knit those panels longer for a more dramatic draped effect.

Yarn
DK or worsted weight

Yardage
Yardage: MC - 700yds / 640m for the waist length version. 1000yds / 914m for the long coat.

CC - 680yds / 530m for the waist length version. 980yds / 896m for the long coat. These are the color pop stripes on the back & front brioche sections.

Long Sleeves require 4 different colors with 200yds / 183m for each color (orange, gold, green, blue)
Approximately 50yds / 46m required for each sleeve hem

Short Sleeves require 4 different colors with 100yds / 91m for each color (green, purple, burgundy, lime green)
Approximately 50yds / 46m required for each sleeve hem

Shoulders - Samples shown using 2 strands held together for a marled effect, so each strand requires 200yds / 183m.
If you are using a single strand of DK or worsted weight, you only need 200yds / 183m total.

Collar - 75yds / 69m (blue collar on the long sleeve version)

The main color is held constantly throughout the back and front pieces for 2-row stripes. The contrast color changes after each 2-row stripe. Break yarn after each contrast color stripe for decorative fringe.

I recommend using a mixture of hand dyed superwash wools along with lofty non-superwash yarns like Brookyn Tweed SHELTER, De Rerum Natura Gilliatt, or Woolfolk Luft. Non-superwash wools help add more structure and body to the fabric so it doesn’t stretch and look too saggy. When I knit large garments, I prefer to mix different types of yarns together for textural variety in the fabric. I also prefer a more dense gauge so the stitches don’t look too loosey goosey, not too tight or too loose.
