Why Bubble and Squeak?

Bubble and squeak is a traditional British dish often served the day after Christmas. Made with shallow fried leftover vegetables from a roast dinner. Potato, cabbage, carrots, peas and Brussels sprouts are chopped up and fried together. This delightful mixture makes a bubbling and squeaking noise as it fries, hence the name.

Whilst designing these mittens using the leftover yarn from my Christmas Socks, I was mulling over what I might call them. My tummy rumbled and the rest, well…..

The mittens are worked using a simple cable on the cuffs and a bias stitch pattern which produces the striking diamond pattern on the hand. The best bit? There are no purl stitches used on the hand! They work up so quickly, these mittens will make great last minute gifts.

Bubble and Squeak is not just for Christmas, these mittens will work well using any self striping or self patterning yarns. Have fun with all those leftovers!
