Covid Hat

A friend saw a picture of the Covid virus and her first thought was that it would make a really pretty fabric and then she realized what she was looking at and was a bit dismayed.
She mentioned it to me and as I stared at the picture- I saw a hat- purl background with pops of other color and a trifoil popcorn all over the hat.
Living in California- we’ve been home bound for the last week and so with all that extra time—the thought became a reality.
So here it is- the Covid hat. Hope it gives you a moment of amusement in these stressful times. When wearing it I hope it reminds people to stay six feet away. Hang in there, everyone.

Materials- Wool ease yarn- worsted weight. Grey Heather. 1 skein (used much less.)
Novelty yarn- Unknown type- I used an eyelash variegated yarn- Fun Fur or something similar would work well
For trifoil popcorn- lighter weight acrylic yarn. Again unknown yarn- it was the right orange….

Gauge-18 stitch to 4 inches. 24 rows to 4 inches.
Size 4 dbl pointed needles for ribbing
Size 6 for body of hat.

Instructions- Cast on 72 stitches- divided on 3 needles. Knit 1 inch ribbing- K1P1 then change to size 6 needles and continue knitting in plain stitch. (the inside of the knitting will be the outside of the cap.
After two rows begin carrying variegated yarn on OUTSIDE of knitting –
Row 1- knit three stitches then knit one stitch with both yarns- repeat to end of row.
Row 2-3 – knit with main yarn only
Row 4- knit 1 stitch then, * knit one stitch with both yarns, knit three stitches with main yarn only, repeat from * to end of row.
Row 5-6 knit with main yarn only.

When 6 inches long including ribbing begin decrease continuing pattern as above-
1st decrease round- knit 6 then knit 2 together, repeat until end. Knit one round plain.
2cd decrease round- knit 5 then knit 2 together, repeat until end. Knit one round plain.
3rd decrease round- knit 4 then knit 2 together, repeat until end. Knit one round plain.
4th decrease round- knit 3 then knit 2 together, repeat until end. Knit one round plain.
5th decrease round- knit 2 then knit 2 together, repeat until end. Knit one round plain.
6th decrease round- knit 1 then knit 2 together, repeat until end. Knit one round plain.
7th decrease round- knit 2 together, repeat until end.
Eight stitches remaining- cut yarn and thread through eight stitches and fasten.

Sewn in ends and turn cap inside out.

Trifoil popcorn-

With size 4 needles- cast on three stitches with 3” tail do Idiot cord for three rows. (google it.)
Then K1P1K1 into 1st stitch, do one row idiot cord on just those three stitches then do second row as follows- K1 pass knit stitch over second stitch, knit that stitch and pass over third stitch then put remaining stitch over first stitch on left hand needle.
Take first stitch and K1P1K1 into that stitch and repeat above instructions then take the last stitch and repeat same instructions the pull yarn through that last stitch and cut yarn leaving a 3 inch tail.
Thread that tail onto needle and insert needle into center of popcorn and out the bottom of the stem.
Use those two tails to attach to hat and tie off on wrong side of hat.
I ended up making 43 popcorns to attach- 7 rows of six with one on top. You can make as many as you can stand to make….
