Simple garter rib mitts with thumb gussets. Both mitts are the same – no right and left. Length is approximately 7”.

The ferry to Argentia on the Avalon Peninsula arrived on a grey morning. After seeing only water and thick fog since daylight, suddenly mist-shrouded islands appreared. After the ferry, our first stop was at Cape St. Mary’s Ecological Reserve, where we saw more fog-shrouded islands covered in birds and grassy cliffs covered in sheep :)

Our Newfoundland trip inspired a collection of patterns - Northward.

Skills required
• Long-tail cast-on
• Increasing
• Decreasing

A note about needles:
I knit the mitts using 2 circulars (my personal favorite method for small circumferences) and used a second set to knit the thumbs while the hand was still on the needles. This gave me a nice thumb gusset with no holes and no mid-knit cast-on. I’ve also used this method using 3 dpns for the thumb.
