When times get tough, we could all use a guardian angel. These small, knitted angels are designed to hang in your home or be given as little tokens of love. The angels are perfect for using up scrap yarn, as each angel requires only a small amount. Just like people, every angel is different — and that uniqueness deserves to be celebrated in all its forms.

With their whimsical expression, the angels make lovely decorations both for Christmas and for the rest of the year. Use them as a guardian angel for a child, a gift for yourself, or for a friend who could use a little extra care.

The angels are knitted as separate pieces, which are then assembled. Pipe cleaners are used to shape the arms and legs, giving each angel a lively and expressive appearance. Finally, the body is filled with carded wool and/or scrap yarn to give it volume and character.

Warning: Recommended for decorative use only and not as a toy for children under three years of age.

SIZES

Size: One size

Length: approx. 10 cm (with slightly bent legs)

Suggested needles: 2 ½ and 3 mm double pointed needles or circular needles (if you are using the Magic loop-technique) (60-80 cm)

Gauge:

In this pattern, it’s not crucial to match the gauge — the angels are meant to have personality. If your gauge is a little off, your angel will simply turn out a bit bigger or smaller, or perhaps with slightly longer or shorter legs. Just like people, all angels come in different sizes, and no matter what, their differences are only cute.

If you prefer a more accurate look and you know that you knit loosely, go down ½ a needle size. If you tend to knit tightly, go up ½ a needle size.

If you want your angels to turn out exactly like the ones I’ve made, use the same yarn and the following gauges:

Head, hands and feet:

32 sts = 10 x 10 cm in stockinette on 2 ½mm needle

Hair:

20 sts = 10 cm in stockinette om 3 mm needle

Body:

25 sts = 10 cm in stockinette on 3mm needle

Wings:

28 sts = 10 cm in stockinette on 3 mm needle

Tools and accessories:

20 mm felt ball
2 pipe cleaners, 15 cm each
Carded wool or other stuffing (scrap yarn can also be used)
1 stitch marker and a few stitch holders (or scraps of yarn)
