Pattern includes charts for hearts, words and squiggles, and the center medallion. You’re welcome to use any of the charts to knit some other kind of hat if you don’t like berets. Leave the squiggles out and the words could go around a regular hat.

You’ll need at least two colors of yarn… more, if you want. It’s up to you.
