Crafters are a naturally generous bunch - we love to make and give fiber-y gifts to those around us, and we’re very good at it! Sometimes, however, we forget to make ourselves gifts.

Have you ever made a project you intended for someone else, but you loved it so much you kept it? That’s what happened as I designed this hat. I loved it so much that I decided to keep it!

My hope is that everyone who makes this hat will keep at least one for themselves!

“Bulwark” is a very stretchy pattern, featuring a unique reversible stitch that will give you a chic hat and a fun project. As written, it is slightly slouchy, but can be adjusted into a beanie/toque or very slouchy hat.

This pattern has been tested and edited for clarity and accuracy.

With regards to yarn substitution:

  • The suggested yarn is a unique sport weight yarn in that it is a singly ply and very airy and light weight. Because of this, it is almost a heavy fingering weight. When looking for a yarn to substitute, I found that yarns that have between 360-400 yds/100 gms (330-65 meters/100 gms) were the best fit for this pattern.

Yarns used in testing include:

  • Madeline Tosh Sock
  • Paton’s Kroy Sock
  • Louet Gems Sport Weight
  • Ice Yarns Baby Design
  • Ice Yarns Antibacterial Magic
  • Loops & Threads Woolike (held double)
  • Nako Lame
