A Few Notes About Intarsia and Working from a Chart
Intarsia is a colorwork method which uses multiple strands and colors of yarn across a row, intertwining along the edge of a section of color as you go. This method uses no (or minimal) stranded knitting. You can use bobbins for each different color of yarn, but a wise knitter taught me once that it’s easier to leave long tails so you can pull those through the sometimes chaotic, often quite messy, collection of yarns which will accumulate at the back of your work.
With patience, Intarsia is easy to master. Just remember to twist the new yarn around the old. If you do end up with any holes (it can happen to the best of us) you can always close them up with a sneaky stitch when you’re weaving in your ends.
The charts for this pattern are read from the bottom up, and in a serpentine fashion: knit on odd rows reading from right to left, purl on even rows reading from left to right. It can take a few rows to get into the rhythm. My favorite tool when knitting from a chart is a sticky note. I place the sticky note on the row above where I am working so I can see how the pattern is emerging, and then I move it up the chart as I finish each row.

I designed these stockings for my three wonderful children.
They make all my days merry and bright.
