Kluane National Park – high in the mountains of southwest Yukon – is a land of extremes. The park is home to Canada’s highest peak (5,959-metre Mount Logan), its largest ice field, and North America’s most genetically diverse grizzly population. Enjoy days hiking to unforgettable vistas and spend cozy nights in the lodges around Kathleen Lake, or take a flightseeing tour to the Icefield Discovery basecamp and spend a few hours or a few days exploring the park’s frozen interior.

The Kluane Overmitts are essential cold weather accessories, whether you are adventuring to Kluane itself, or hiking around your own neighbourhood. Designed to be worn over a pair of commercial fleece gloves or mittens, the Overmitts will help insulate against the insistent fingers of glacial winds. Latvian braids and corrugated ribbing add interest to a simple design, and the recommended dense gauge makes these mittens durable and warm. The mittens fit loosely to accommodate the fleece linings, but may be adapted somewhat for wearing as stand-alone accessories.

Materials Needed:

  • 4mm (US 6) circular or dpn needles or size needed to meet gauge
  • Small fingerless: 55 yards contrast colour aran weight yarn / @115 yards main colour aran weight yarn
  • Small full hand: 30 yards contrast colour aran weight yarn / @200 yards main colour aran weight yarn
  • Medium fingerless: 50 yards contrast colour aran weight yarn / @125 yards main colour aran weight yarn
  • Medium full hand: 35 yards contrast colour aran weight yarn / @210 yards main colour aran weight yarn
  • Large fingerless: 55 yards main colour aran weight yarn / @135 yards main colour aran weight yarn
  • Large full hand: 40 yards contrast colour aran weight yarn / @220 yards main colour aran weight yarn

Optional:

  • Marker for end/start of round
  • Tapestry needle for weaving in ends

Gauge:
20 sts x 30 rows = 4 inches stocking stitch in the round
22 sts x 24 rows = 4 inches corrugated ribbing in the round

A note on sizes: the finished mittens are considerably larger than most mittens, as they are designed to fit over commercial fleece or knitted gloves or mittens.

Final measurements 8”, 8.5”, and 9” circumference; from wrist to fingertips 7.5”, 8”, 8.5”. With some adaptations to the wrist and gusset, these mittens may be adjusted to fit normally for larger sizes than those listed.
