These colorblock mittens are like a knitted jigsaw puzzle. Worked sideways in garter stitch with a simple intarsia technique, the graphic garter stripes create a staggered, interlocking pattern on the hand. A decorative seam is used at the center of the palm, while cuff and thumb are worked circularly as “afterthoughts”. We chose a tonal combination of greys for our sample, but can think of plenty of tempting color combinations that would look just as fetching.

CONSTRUCTION

  • Mittens are worked flat and seamed mid-palm and at the top using a Joinery Bind Off.
  • Thumb placement is established using waste yarn as you knit; stitches are picked up to work the thumbs in the round.
  • The cuff is picked up after mitten is complete and worked circularly in garter stitch.
