This shawl design was inspired by the striking blooms of Rautini, also known as the Chatham Island Christmas tree, which is found only on New Zealand’s Chatham Islands. Admired for its brilliant clusters of daisy-like flowers, this unique plant blooms during the summer in Southern Hemisphere.

This design is my classic top-down short row crescent shawl with two size options, Large and Small, which can be customized even further.

The pattern is charted and includes full row-by-row instructions as well.

The short rows are worked in garter stitch, so the wraps can be left in place, unworked, hidden within the texture.

The lace pattern is worked only on the right side of the project and the wrong side rows are all simply purled.

There are beads added throughout the lace and three different beading options are charted, but the project will work just as well without any beads.

Both sizes of the shawl can be worked in lace or fingering, as well as sport weight and DK yarns (heavier yarns may require extra yardage and larger needles).

Solid, tonal, and gradient or ombre yarns will work with this lace beautifully.

Finished Measurements:
Large: 25” / 63.5 cm (center depth) x 75” / 145 cm (wingspan)
Small: 20” / 51 cm (center depth) x 48” / 127 cm (wingspan)
Note: Measurements taken after blocking.

Yarn (gradient, solid, or tonal colors):
Large: Any lace or fingering weight yarn, approx 735 - 785 yards total; the Large sample was completed with Yarn Carnival Fire Dancer (100% Superwash Merino; 822 yards / 752 m / 150 grams); color: Luminous Flux
Small: Any lace or fingering weight yarn, approx 425 - 475 yards; the Small sample was completed with KnitCircus Greatest of Ease (80% Superwash Merino, 20% Nylon; 600 yards / 549 m / 150 grams); color: Hummingbird Variation (this was a larger skein than the 400 yard size listed in Ravelry database)

Notions:
Crochet hook size 0.75mm (or smaller as needed to fit through holes of beads, optional)
Stitch markers
Yarn needle
Blocking pins

Beads (optional):
lots of beads / fewer beads / just edges
Large 651 / 313 / 131
Small 350 / 168 / 70
Note: These are exact numbers, purchasing a few extra beads is recommended.
Bead size depends on the weight of your yarn. Because of the relatively large number of beads in the “lots of beads” option, a large lace weight shawl would probably work best with 8/0 3.00mm beads to avoid straining the yarn too much, but the same shawl worked in fingering or sport weight could easily support 6/0 4.00mm beads.
