These “Finger and Thumb” style mittens are most commonly referred to as “Trigger Mitts” in Newfoundland.
They have a striped ribbed cuff, thumb gusset, and grafted end.

“Double knit” and “Double-ball knitting” are traditional Newfoundland terms for stranded colour work, and do not refer to the two-layered fabric that “double knit” more widely refers to. The pattern includes a colour-work chart; the design is generally referred to as the Labrador Diamond.

Lady’s size knit with 3.75 mm (size 9) needles.

Pattern calls for 1 skein (272 yards/249 metres) dark 2-ply yarn, 1 skein contrasting colour. Briggs & Little Heritage, Regal, or Tuffy are common choices.
