Slumber Shawl 3-Skein Alterations

I wanted to make the Slumber Shawl, designed by westknits and after looking at the yardage I realized it should be possible to make this shawl with 3 skeins of Jump Scare Aran.

These skeins are 115 grams (190 meters) and should be just enough to make an altered version of the shawl.

How I did it:
I wrote down a LOT of details pertaining to the amount of grams I used. The skeins of Jump Scare tend to be well over 115 grams in weight, so I started out with the following:

Color A: Unreturned (122 grams)
Color B: Hack-O-Lantern (120 grams)
Color C: Giallo (125 grams)

Your best friend in this case is an accurate and precise scale (I used one of those scales that goes down to 0,01 grams, you know, the ones all the druggies have).

When I switched colors:

  • Follow the pattern as described with color A;
  • Row 59: Start with color B and follow the pattern (alternating A & B);
  • Row 71: Last switch from A to B, continue pattern in B from this point;
  • Row 93 & 94: Use color B;
  • Row 95 & 96: Use color C;
  • Row 97 & 98: Use color B;
  • Row 99: Last switch from B to C, continue pattern in C from this point (all ‘color D’ mentioned in pattern is now color C);
  • Row 115: Repeat Rows 111 - 114 once instead of twice;
  • Break color C.
  • Bind Off: I did not have enough yarn in a single color to safely attempt an i-cord bind off. In stead I knit one whole row on the RS in color A and did a stretchy bind off working from the WS. I held it together with a strand of Crites Kidsilk in the same color (Unreturned) for a bit of playfulness.

DONE! Block that bad boy!

Weigh-Ins:
All weigh ins are done after the row mentioned below.

  • Row 58: 37 grams of A left;
  • Row 70: 19 grams of A left / 101 grams of B left;
  • Row 74: 90 grams of B left;
  • (I calculated that in Rows 75-90 about 28 - 31 grams per repeat are used)
  • Row 92: 24 grams of B left;
  • Row 94: 15 grams of B left;
  • Row 98: 8 grams of B left;
  • Row 104: 88 grams of C left;
  • Row 110: 53 grams of C left;
  • Row 114: 30 grams of C left;
  • Row 118: 5 grams of C left before breaking color

In retrospect:
I could have squeezed out one more repeat in color A at the beginning, leaving more of color C to bind off with, though the contrasting color bind off looks pretty cool.
