Notes

I was a little bit apprehensive about starting this jacket as it has acres of garter stitch. But the longer I worked on it, the more I enjoyed it. And I was completely ignoring the fact that if I stuck to the pattern properly, then the jacket would be 30” long… So I had to take off almost 4” after sewing up.

Pattern notes:
Body: I added two short rows between the two phoney seams to add some length to the back.

Sleeves: I made long sleeves, and used 15% of K (instead of the recommended 12-13%). After sewing up they were still about 2” too short, but after washing & blocking the were perfect. Garter st grows a lot sideways! I also put in short rows every other ridge, to taper the sleeves. I used a complicated way, partially to keep it interesting, but next time I would place half of all the short rows at the beginning and the other half at the end, so the shape is more like a classic sleeve.

Shoulder shaping: as per pattern directions.

Collar: I added two short rows to raise the back of the collar. I didn’t do the decreases at the beginning and end of the rows, as I wanted the zip to go all the way up.

Afterthought pockets: as per pattern directions.

Phoney seams: I used the normal phoney seam, not the reversible one.

Zip: applied after washing & blocking. I first tacked closed the front of the jacket, then tacked the closed zip in place, making sure it was centred. I then opened the zip and first back stitched right next to the teeth and then whipped the other side in place.
