14 DALEKS & THE TARDIS©

Newly updated pattern is now available! It is highly recommended to work from the new version. Most of the beads and increases have been moved to the right side rows, errata have been fixed including the problems with the transposed Dalek charts; helpful tips for customization are now included.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask. Again, thank you for your patience and deepest apologies for any inconvenience.

This pattern is for my variation on Kate Atherley’s ‘Bigger on the Inside’ shawl featuring 14 Daleks (7 right facing and 7 left facing) and one Tardis, after all, there is only one Tardis, right?!

You will need to work the Vortex Lace section as per the original Bigger on the Inside, with one extra lace increase section and one extra decrease section to get this size of shawl. You can find the free pattern here.

The edges are more tapered than blunt. A very full ribbed and lace edge section completes my version.

While the gauge here lists 22st in 10 cm, please continue with the appropriate needle size you used for the Vortex lace portion of the shawl.

The charts are modular.
Add as many, or as few, Daleks or Tardis’ as you like. Initial and final stitch counts of each panel are included with the charts.

Since the Dalek and Tardis motifs are worked from the ‘top down’ they are worked upside down so that they are right side up when the shawl is worn. To add some sparkle I used 3 kinds of beads: You can, of course, use whichever combination of beads that you like, or none at all.

The pattern is charted only with written directions on how to work the charts etc, but the pattern is not written out line by line.

Special stitches used include: cables, twisted stitches, slipped stitches, beading, lace and mini bobbles. N.B. Some of the cables are worked on the Wrong Side rows, not many, but a few. You may find it easier to turn the work so the right side is facing you to work these ones - then continue the WS row as charted, of course!

I used almost 200g of fingering weight superwash wool in the colour ‘I think you call me Sexy’ by Sheepytime knits.
Total bead count:
Blue beads: 460
Clear beads: 36
Unique square bead: 1

Allons-y!!

p.s. photos here are pre-blocking.. I’ll try to get some better blocked photos when the sun decides to come out again :)
