On 24 August 2014, a pair of silk stockings was found in a shipwreck off the island of Texel. The ship, also known as BZN17 or the Palmhoutwrak, sunk between 1645 and 1670 and contained, in addition to the silk stockings, a silk dress and parts of other items of clothing. The pattern of the stockings was analysed in 2018 and volunteers from the Textile Research Centre, Leiden made several reconstructions. It became clear that the stockings were probably made with gummed silk and were degummed after knitting. The stockings can also be made with smooth, already degummed silk.
The stocking is 63 cm long and has a foot length of 24 cm.
Knitting a stocking may take approximately 200 hours!
