A Time for Reflection… Orange for Phyllis…

This was my first pattern for the KAL Every Child Matters. Originally all net proceeds from the sale of this pattern were donated to the Indigenous Music Program in my local Community. Now a free pattern, so pick up your needles for 2025 Reconciliation Day.
This asymmetrical wrap in Lichen and Lace 1 ply Superwash Merino paired with Marsh Mohair is adorned with 215 buttons in memory of the First Nations children lost to us in Kamloops, BC, Canada.
As I sewed on each button I thought of each little child and each family affected by this devasting loss. A more somber knit. Knit with much love, caring and respect.
On May 27th, 2021, Canadians faced yet again, the painful reminder of a shameful chapter in Canada’s history. The discovery of 215 remains of Indigenous Children in unmarked graves at a Residential School in Kamloops, BC, Canada with many more to follow. The long awaited road to Respectful Reconciliation is now on our minds. I felt compelled to honour and respect our First Nations and Indigenous peoples. To this end I have designed a trio of handknits. A Child’s buttoned Poncho, a shawl, and a buttoned cowl.
