The groundbreaking Bauhaus, a German art school that operated from 1919 to 1933, celebrated functional art and design and gender equality – but in practice, women were barred from different disciplines at the school like woodworking, metal and glass. That’s how Anni Albers landed in a weaving workshop under the instruction of Gunta Stölzl, the Bauhaus’ only female master who paved the way in reimagining weaving as a modern, industrial art form. Anni Albers would go on to challenge the pictorial European tapestry tradition with her combination of loom and hand weaving, spontaneous experimentation with the form, and iconic geometric patterns. Our cozy and understated Albers Socks are a nod to the modern and functional spirit of Anni and the Bauhaus – perfect when paired with your favorite faded overalls for a day in the studio.

Materials

  • Approximately 220 (250, 290) yards (201 (227, 265) meters) of fingering-weight yarn in Main Color (MC); 17 (19, 21) yards (16 (17, 19) meters) in Contrasting Color (CC)
  • ArtFil Belle (80% Merino wool, 20% nylon; 387 yards (354 meters) per 100g)
  • 1 skein in MC (shown in Cabane-a-Sucre), 1 skein in CC (shown in Natural)

Note: Just prior to this pattern being published, ArtFil discontinued the Cabane-a-Sucre colorway. We recommend using the color Spicy, which is a similar burnt orange shade.
