I designed this hat while following the NASA Artemis II moon mission (April 1-10, 2026). It brought me such a sense of hope and optimism seeing the humanity and humor of the astronauts, the brilliance of the mission control folks, and the beauty of our planet. This is a free pattern, as all mine are. I’ve test knit it but the pattern has not been tech edited. I’ve tried to make it clear so you can recreate it.

Skills needed: This is a medium difficulty pattern. It involves stranded color work in the round, either carrying long floats with catches (I like every 5th stitch) or using the Ladder Back Jacquard technique. The logo is finished with duplicate stitches.

The “Amaze! Amaze! Amaze!” quote was used by NASA during the conversations with the astronauts while they were observing the moon. It is from Andy Weir’s excellent novel Project Hail Mary. I hope it’s a fun pattern to knit and you get as much Moon Joy as I did watching the live stream and all the wonderful imagery we’ve seen since.

Size: Adult Small 19” For larger diameter go up a needle size.
