This is a snug, comfortable hat that works up in a gorgeous diamond cable pattern. The cabling looks very complicated, but is really just basic cables worked in conjunction with sneaky shaping! If you have a basic understanding of cabling, you will be able to work this pattern.

I have given instructions on how to make this same pattern work for a variety of different styles. You can work the Standard beanie for a fit that is close to your head – a classic silhouette. You can also work it in a Slouch style to make a more modern fit. If you want a beret-style hat, work the instructions for the Slouch style hat and just block the hat over a plate when finished.

Note that this pattern has a chart. If you are unfamiliar or uncomfortable working with a chart, make sure you download the 2nd file available, called “Ashland Beanie Written Chart Rows”.

Techniques: Knitting in the round, basic cabling, basic chart reading (optional), basic increases and decreases.
