This T-shirt is a variation of the original AUGUSTA shirt and is named after my aunt Gusta – a remarkable woman who was like a grandmother to me. A few years ago, she fell seriously ill, and we knew that medicine couldn’t offer a cure. During that time, we had many heartfelt conversations. One of her wishes was that her clothes – items she truly cherished – would continue to be worn by her family.
After she passed away, one of her shirts found its way into my wardrobe. But wearing her clothes proved difficult – for me, and for others in the family. So I decided to use that shirt as inspiration for a new knitting pattern. This way, her clothing could still be worn and cherished – perhaps even beyond our family.
In that sense, the shirt becomes wearable in both a literal and emotional way – and the grief, a little more bearable. In this way, she remains close to us.

The AUGUSTA shirt is knitted top down. You begin by working the back yoke flat. Then, each shoulder is worked separately, also flat. The shoulders are then joined to form the front yoke. Front and back are connected to shape the armholes and form the body, which is worked entirely in the round. The sleeves are worked in the round as well, after picking up stitches around the armholes. Finally, stitches are picked up around the neckline to finish the collar.
