The Birch Street Hat is a combination of texture and soft alpaca wool that is as much fun to make as it is to wear. The topping tassel is a welcome change of pace from pom pom hats, but a pom pom can be easily substituted or the tassel can be omitted altogether.

Using less than one skein of Berroco Ultra Alpaca, (or your choice of worsted weight yarn), the Birch Street hat is also a quick knit, making it a perfect last minute project. The pattern is easy to memorize, which means this a great on-the-go project. The project is suitable for adventurous beginners.

The hat begins with a bit of textured ribbing and then a subtle geometric pattern emerges. The neutral nature of the pattern means the hat will be equally suitable for men or women, although some men may prefer a pom pom, (or no further embellishment at all), to the tassel.

While I’ve used a soft alpaca wool for comfort and cosiness, a more rounded worsted weight yarn, such as MadelineTosh Vintage, would make the texture of this hat really pop. The pattern would work equally well for either type of yarn, so go with your own personal preference! I would suggest using solid or semi-solids, though, so as not to lose the subtle geometric pattern.

Note: The total yardage stated is to make the hat with the tassel or a pom pom. If you decide to omit that part your yardage requirement will be slightly less.
