This pattern is for a crocheted hat with wave motifs, using overlay mosaic crochet techniques. The hat is made in the round, from the brim up, in one piece, requiring no seaming.
The Blue Wave overlay mosaic crochet hat is offered in four sizes (XS, S, M, L), that fits a head circumference of (17–18”, 19–20”, 21–22”, 23–24”) or (43–46 cm, 48–51 cm, 53–56 cm, 58.5–61 cm), typical of a (Child 3–10 years old, Teen/Small Adult, Medium Adult, Large Adult).
The hat is worked in the round, from the bottom-up, starting with the ribbing. This way, if you are unsure about which size to make, you can try it on early, see how it fits and change sizes, if needed. The pattern was developed for DK weight yarn, with a gauge of 18 dc stitches per 4”.
The crown’s dome shape is completed with decreases, so the top is smooth and round, not gathered/cinched. The shape is more of a beanie, not of a slouchy type hat.
This pattern is not complicated, but if you are completely new to crochet as a craft, this will be too challenging as a first project. If you are confident in your basic crochet skills, but new to mosaic crochet, this may be a good introductory project. The stitches you need to know are ch, slst, sc, hdc, dc, fpdc, bpdc. You need to know which is the front loop, and which is the back loop.
