Have you heard of the Kookaburra? What about their laugh? It is as contagious as Chia is cute!

I had been asked many times to design a Kookaburra but I didn’t want to rush it. I just love the modern take I have finished with from the brown stripe around the head to the colour block down the one-piece wing. I hope you enjoy making Chia, she was a delight to design!

Chia is an intermediate amigurumi (crochet) pattern written in US (American) terms. The pattern includes detailed instructions in an easy to follow layout but a knowledge of basic crochet stitches and techniques used to make amigurumi is essential.

Your tension, yarn thickness and hook size used will affect the size of your finished items. My Chia is approximately 15cm tall (6 inches).

You will need:

  • 2.75mm hook/C-2 (US)
  • 8ply yarns/DK or Light Worsted, less than 50g in TAN, CREAM, BROWN, BLUE and GREY
  • 8mm safety eyes
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry needle
  • Polyester toy stuffing
  • Stitch marker (optional)

Notes:

  • Amigurumi is usually stitched in the round and a yarn with no stretch is best.
  • When changing colour, pull through the new colour on the stitch before you need it. This will ensure that you have the correct colour yarn on the hook for the upcoming stitch.
  • Generally, the hook you use for amigurumi will be a smaller than for other crochet as you want the stitches tight.
  • Your tension, yarn thickness and hook size used will affect the size of your finished items.
  • I’ve used the following yarns: o TAN = Paintbox Yarns Cotton DK in Col. 408 Vanilla Cream o CREAM = Paintbox Yarns Cotton DK in Col. 403 Champagne White o BROWN = Paintbox Yarns Cotton DK in Col. 410 Soft Fudge o BLUE = Paintbox Yarns Cotton DK in Col. 436 Duck Egg Blue o GREY = Paintbox Yarns Cotton DK in Col. 405 Stormy Grey
  • I have used plastic safety eyes but you may choose to embroider the eyes. Please ensure that there are no loose fittings.
