Can use any yarn from fingering to aran with corresponding hook depending on what you want the finished size to be. Stitches should be reasonably tight without gaps between the stitches.
To make a 10-11 cms coaster, I used 100% cotton fingering yarn in 3-4 colours and gold metallic yarn with a hook size of 2.75mm. Can also use 2.5mm or 3mm depending on your tension.
I used the following
Scheepjes Catona(SC) and or Soft Feather Nature Cotton(NC) and AB Rotex Metallic Handicraft Yarn in Gold/silver
You can use just one yarn but at least 2 colors to get the desired effect.
