I designed this hat after knitters asked for an adult version of the Clapdale Baby Hat from my Knitted With Love book. So, I named it Clapham, after the village in the Clapdale Valley – just up the road from my Skipton studio!

At my Yarnaholics group, we tried this hat on every head and found it fitted all sizes beautifully. Some knitters thought they had big heads that hats wouldn’t fit, but after measuring, we discovered there was only a 5cm difference between the smallest and largest head. This hat stretched comfortably to fit everyone!

I love the classic ecru look for this hat, but if you’re feeling adventurous, try WYS The Croft Shetland Tweed Aran – the colours are stunning!

CONSTRUCTION
Knitted flat in one piece from the bottom up with one seam.

TECHNIQUES USED
Cast on, knit, purl, three simple cable techniques, decreasing, cast off. Optional but recommended to create the feeling of joy when joining your pieces: mattress stitch.

YARN
One 100g hank of WYS Bluefaced Leicester Aran – Undyed
100% British Bluefaced Leicester wool, 166m/182yds per 100g

SUGGESTED KNITTING NEEDLES
4.5mm and 5mm.

NOTIONS
Cable needle.

GAUGE (tension)
24 stitches and 26 rows to 10cm square over cable pattern when slightly stretched. I obtained this gauge with 4.5mm needles.
It is important to obtain gauge so do swatch and change your needle size to achieve the correct gauge if you need to.

SIZE
To fit adult head.
Due to the nature of the rib pattern & individual gauges the finished circumference can vary from 52cm to 60cm. If the knitter gets the gauge as above the finished circumference will be approx. 56cm.
