This sock pattern was for the first Westknits Surprise Sock Along 2023. You can now download all of the instructions to knit these beautifully detailed socks. They are knit top-down with simple cables, stripes, slip stitches, and lots of crispy texture! Even the toes feature a lovely broken rib detail. Each section includes video tutorials linked in the pattern to help you confidently treat your toes to warm and woolly stitches.

Sizes
1 (2, 3, 4, 5)

Finished Measurements
6.5 (8, 9.5, 10.5, 12)″ / 17 (20, 24, 27, 30)cm leg and foot circumference. Measurements taken after blocking. These are the measurements of the sock.

Socks are designed to fit an actual foot circumference of 7.5 (9, 10.5, 11.5, 13)″ / 19 (23, 27, 29, 33)cm. The socks are designed to fit with negative ease. Choose a size with a finished foot circumference measurement that is approximately 1″ / 2.5cm smaller than your actual foot circumference. Measure your foot around the center part of your foot. For example, if your actual foot circumference is 9″ / 23cm, then knit Size 2 of the sock. The sock should fit nice and snug on your foot with negative ease.

The length of the foot is easily customizable.

Yarn
Fingering weight

Yardage
MC - 1 skein (100g) fingering weight sock yarn
CC - 1 skein (100g) fingering weight sock yarn

You will have leftovers of each color. These are more specific
yardage requirements for each size.

MC - 180 (200, 310, 340, 380)yds / 165 (183, 283, 311, 347)m
CC - 120 (160, 240, 280, 300)yds / 110 (146, 219, 256, 274)m

I recommend having a bit more than the exact recommended yardage amounts to ensure you do not run out of yarn. 1 skein of each color is more than enough yarn to complete any of the 5 sizes. These yarn amounts will produce a complete pair of socks, the right sock and the left sock.

Needles
US 1 / 2.25mm DPNs or size needed to obtain gauge.

Watch this Westknits video to assist with knitting with DPNs.

You can use the Magic Loop method for knitting in the rnd if
you have a size 1 / 2.25mm circular needle in a 40″ / 100cm
length. Watch this Westknits video to assist with the Magic Loop
technique.

If you want to knit both socks simultaneously, then you will need two sets of DPNs or circulars.

Notions
3 stitch markers, cable needle, tapestry needle

You can use an extra DPN for your cable needle. Make sure your cable needle is a similar size/thickness as your working needle.

Gauge
32 sts & 52 rnds = 4″ / 10cm in stockinette stitch after blocking
36 sts & 64 rnds in slip stitch pattern after blocking (see Slip
Stitch Swatch)
The socks are knit with a firm tidy gauge. You may need to go down one or two needle sizes to achieve gauge and that’s okay. Getting a similar stitch gauge is more important than rnd gauge.
