In this digital crochet pattern, you’ll learn how to crochet solid granny squares and turn them into crochet headphone covers for the Apple AirPods Max headphones. The crochet tutorial is designed for advanced beginners and takes 2-3 hours to complete, depending on experience and skill level.

The granny square crochet pattern includes four downloads: A stylized digital pattern that you can use on your phone or tablet, a basic PDF pattern with photos, a basic PDF pattern without photos (text only), and a list of materials.

5.0 mm H-8, 5.5 mm I-9, or 6.0 mm J-10 crochet hook (SEE NOTE)*
Tapestry needle
Sewing needle with a large eye (the needle needs to fit in the buttonholes, so a tapestry needle won’t work)
15 mm flat back buttons (you need 2 for one pair)
Medium (4) worsted-weight acrylic yarn in at least one color. (if you want to make your covers striped or multicolored, you can choose up to 7 colors).

• Everyone stitches differently, and some medium-weight yarns can also vary in size. Therefore, your gauge and tension might not align with this pattern. If you have tight tension, use a 6.0 mm J-10 crochet hook, otherwise, use a 5.5 mm I-9 crochet hook. If your tension is loose and the gauge of your granny square doesn’t match the gauge in this project, consider sizing down to a 5.0 mm H-8 crochet hook (or smaller if needed).

This pattern was tested on Soft Classic™ Solid Yarn by Loops & Threads (Michaels), Big Twist Value Yarn (JOANN), I Love This Yarn 4 (Hobby Lobby and Amazon), and 24/7 Cotton® Yarn (Lion Brand Yarn). I recommend these medium (4) weight options for this project but don’t hesitate to experiment with different medium/worsted weight yarns. As long as your granny square base aligns with the size in this pattern, your covers will fit.
