Inspired by Daenerys and her dragons from the Game of Thrones series, Dany is a fitted, cropped tank with kind of a racerback look and feel. It begins with a beautiful tubular cast on and twisted ribbing that flows seamlessly into a diagonal ribbing pattern, splitting off from a center ‘spine’ of twisted knits to create a beautiful texture and fit. It also features a V-neck in front leading up into wide straps that overlap at the center back. This design is worked flat from the bottom up in two panels, then blocked and seamed. The twisted ribbing does take time, so find your most pointed needles that are nice and comfortable for your hands, and really just take your time with this one!

NOTE: During testing, there were issues with the strap length (affecting the armhole depth) that were corrected after a majority of testers had finished or passed that point in the pattern. Some testers were ok with it, others adjusted it, so I just wanted to be clear and let you know that as you’re looking through their projects! Most if not all will have notes in their projects as well :)

  • Skills to know: Tubular/provisional cast on, knit, purl, increase, decrease, twisted decreases and stitches, three-needle bind off, and how to seam using mattress stitch
  • You’ll need: US size 3 (3.25mm) and US size 2 (2.75mm) needles (or sizes needed to obtain gauge, 16-32” circulars recommended, and the more pointed/not dull the better), crochet hook for provisional cast on, waste yarn for cast on and to place stitches on hold, stitch markers including 1 removable marker, and a tapestry needle. Blocking wires and knit blockers are optional but very helpful for blocking.

  • Complete written instructions on how to knit Dany in 16 different sizes, worked flat from the bottom up in panels then seamed. The PDF is a total of 32 pages (including the cover page and shaping charts for all sizes).
  • Decrease charts for the front panel to help when multiple decreases are worked simultaneously, which are great to help track your progress and stitch counts!
  • Links to helpful tutorials, including the tubular cast on and twisted decreases
  • Short photo guides showing how to block your ribbing swatch and final top

Notes on sizing:

  • This pattern is written for 16 sizes, ranging from 23.25-62.75 in/59-159.5 cm finished bust, with a recommended negative ease of up to about 6”/15 cm at the bust. There is no waist shaping in this design, and the ribbing pattern allows for more flexibility with the final fit. E.g. If your full bust measures 33”/84 cm, you could make size 3, 4, or 5 depending on your preference.
  • Original sample shown is the size 3 (28.5”/72.5 cm), worn on a 33”/84 cm bust, 27”/68.5 cm waist (giving 4.5”/11.5 cm negative ease at the bust and 1.5”/4 cm positive ease at the waist)
  • Dany is designed to have a cropped fit, but is easily customizable to fit your preference! Schematic with measurements included in the Ravelry images section and pattern.

Pattern gauge:

There are two different gauges for this pattern

  • Twisted 1x1 K1TBL, P1TBL ribbing: 4”/10 cm = 30 sts/40 rows, slightly stretched (photo guide included in pattern for this) taken after wet blocking, using US size 3 (3.25mm) needles
  • Stockinette: 4”/10 cm = 29 sts/40 rows taken after wet blocking, using US size 2 (2.75mm) needles

All measurements are approximate and taken after blocking. Inches are rounded to the nearest 0.25 in and centimeters to the nearest 0.5 cm.
