Directions for three sizes are provided: small: 19” circumference-older child or small woman; medium: 21” circumference-woman; large: 22.5” circumference-man.

The hat is started by knitting a band of garter ridges with alternating colors (MC and CC). The folding line is accomplished by purling a st on each wrong side row. The band is not divided equally by the turning line. The shorter side of the band is closer to the head and the longer side faces outward. At the length for each size, a final MC ridge is knit. Then the sts are bound off on a right side row. Stitches are picked up purlwise from the wrong side of the band’s shorter side. These sts are then connected. Stockinette st is knit until a spiral decrease pattern forms the top of the hat. The cast on and bound off edges of the band are seamed together.

One skein of each color is needed to knit the hat. Depending on the size of the hat, enough yarn remains to make at least one other hat or small cowl.
