“Fire leaped from the dragon’s jaws. He circled for a while high in the air above them lighting all the lake; the trees by the shores shone like copper and like blood with leaping shadows of dense black at their feet.”
— J.R.R. Tolkien, The Hobbit, ch. 14

Skill-level: Intermediate, due to cabling and sock construction; nothing too adventuresome, though.
Materials: 350-400 yards (320-365m) of sock yarn. The socks pictured are a size Large and used approximately 385 yards of Wollmeise Twin in the color Rubin.

Needles: US1 (2.25mm) sock needles (pattern is written for both DPN and magic loop knitters)
Tools: Cable needle, if required, tape measure, tapestry needle, scissors
Gauge: 32 stitches & 36 rounds per 4 inches or 10 cm, measured in stockinette stitch.
Sizing: Small (Medium, Large, Extra-large) sizes measure approximately 8(9,10,11) inches around, leg height, ankle depth, and foot length are all adjustable to fit and preference.
Sizing note: the cables create a more restrictive fabric. Although not extremely tight, if you are in doubt, I recommend sizing up rather than down.

Abbreviations:
K= knit
P= purl
S= slip
SSK= work a slip-slip-knit over the next two stitches
K2tog= knit the next two stitches together
P2tog= purl the next two stitches together

All other stitches are defined in the chart key, and include various types of cable stitches.
