The cable and lace band around the brim of this fashionable slouchy hat is striking and distinctive, and then the rest of
the hat is worked in relaxing stockinette. This is the perfect hat to reach for when you’re going out and want to feel a little fancy—even if you’re just heading to the grocery store.

Cable and lace pattern is charted only in booklet. Individual pattern includes written instructions and charts.

Level 3—Intermediate

Finished Size 20” brim circumference and 81/2” tall from bottom edge to top.
Yarn Anzula Cloud (80% merino, 10% cashmere, 10% nylon; 575 yd 525 m/4.02 oz 114 g): seabreeze, 1 skein.
Needles Size 2 (2.75 mm): 16” or 20” circular (cir) and set of double-pointed (dpn). Adjust needle size if necessary to obtain the correct gauge.
Notions Marker (m); cable needle (cn); smooth waste yarn; crochet hook if desired for provisional cast-on.
Gauge 30 sts and 44 rnds = 4” in St st, blocked; 1 repeat of cable and lace pattern = 2” wide and 21/2” tall after blocking.

  • The hat starts with a provisional CO, and then the cable and lace band is worked sideways. After the band is blocked to the correct length, the sts on either end are joined together and sts are picked up around the circumference for the body of the hat.
  • Achieving proper blocked row gauge in the Cable and Lace patt is more important than st gauge to ensure a good fit.
  • The live sts at the ends of the cable and lace band are joined with a 3-needle BO, which leaves a subtle seam. If you prefer not to have a seam, stop after Row 27 of the final Cable and Lace patt rep, and graft the live sts together with the sts from the provisional CO in the same rib patt as Row 28 of the Cable and Lace patt.
