This pattern is for a mosaic crochet square that can be used in other types of projects, such as blankets, pillows, satchel bags, table mats, etc.

Any yarn or hook will work, depending on the desired size of the finished square. I used yarn weight of 4 with a 5.5 hook, which creates a square of 13.5” x 13”.

To do the scarab in the colors shown in the sample image, you will need 3 colors - one for the background (tan), one for the outline (black), and then one for the beetle color (teal - or whatever color you want). This pattern can also be done just using 2 colors of yarn - one for the background & beetle, and then one for the outlines & stripes. You can also use various colors if you want the background &/or beetle to have horizontal striping or a gradient.

This is a great way to use up scraps! For the sample image, you would need approximately 2 oz of the black, and 1 oz each of the tan & teal.

Pattern is in US crochet terms.
