Cozy, versatile, and stylish: the Falling Foliage Cowl knits up quite quickly for gifts or for urgent accessory coordination. Small buttons are used so that buttonholes are not needed, and you can button the cowl any which-way you’d like ( with the leaves pointing up or pointing down, as a tube, a smaller tube, with a triangle-front, an asymmetrical-rectangle-side, or some other configuration I’ve not yet figured out).

Includes two options for the top border. One, shown in the green cowl, mirrors the bottom border. An alternate ending, shown in the pastel multi-colored cowl, integrates the top border into the last few rows to save precious length if you fear running out of yarn.

On 9/19/16 a new edition of the Falling Foliage Cowl was released. It’s no longer free, but has been extensively upgraded.

Yarn: Any bulky weight yarn, 100-130 yds (91.5-119 m). Shown in: Manos Del Uruguay “Wool Clasica Naturals” in Color 707. Also shown in Lion Brand “Landscapes”, in color “Pastel Meadows” which has been discontinued.
Gauge: 3 sts/in (12 sts/4in, 12 sts/10cm) in stockinette st.
Needles: circular needle in size needed to obtain gauge, (I used US 9/5.5mm). Long straight needles would also work.
Size: Approx. 26in/66cm around and 8.5 in/21.5 cm tall. The “alternate ending” will make the cowl about 1in/2.5cm shorter. Size can be altered by adjusting the gauge or adding stitches to the garter st. borders panels.
Notions: 4 small buttons. The pastel cowl is shown with 4 faux-pearl buttons aprox. .5 in/1.25cm across. The green cowl is shown with a set of vintage clip-on earrings & a matching pin.
Skills: cast on and off, knit, purl, increases, decreases, attach buttons.
Accessibility Notes: All charted sections also written, 12 point serif font with bolded and (some) underlined headings, no columns (except for abbreviation key), stitch counts provided for every row of main pattern.
