A play on the traditional fur stole, Felix Fox is a friend you wear around your neck. The colorwork and three-dimensional aspects make this pattern fun and challenging. This pattern requires basic crochet skills. If you can chain and single crochet, you’ll be fine.

Techniques Used

Knits, Purls, Carrying Colors, Increases, Decreases, Provisional Cast On, Picking Up Stitches, Single Crochets and Crochet chains.

Materials

Yarn:
Bulky weight yarn, approximately 256 yds (234 m) total.
Main color (Yarn 1), orange or red: 128 yds (117 m).
Contrast color (Yarn 2), white or cream: 128 yds (117 m).
DK weight scrap yarn, approximately
8 yds (7.5m).
Trim color (Yarn 3), brown or black:
8 yds (7.5m).
Waste yarn, similar in weight to the main yarn (smooth cotton is best, although anything that won’t snag or felt will do) for the provisional cast on. 10 yds (9 m).

Shown in:
Yarn 1: Cascade 128 Superwash, colorway Burgundy, #855. 100% superwash merino wool, 128 yds (117 m) / 100g. 1 skein.
Yarn 2: Cascade 128 Superwash, colorway Ecru, #817. 100% superwash merino wool, 128 yds (117 m) / 100g. 1 skein.
Yarn 3: I’ve used wool, acrylic, and blends. As long as you use DK weight and nothing too fuzzy, any dark leftover will do.

Needles: One set U.S. size 15 (10 mm) single pointed needles or U.S. size 15 (10 mm) 29” (73 cm) circular needle flat needles; one set of U.S. size 13 (9 mm) double pointed needles dpns; U.S. size K (6.5 mm) crochet hook small hook; U.S. size P (11.5 mm) crochet hook large hook. Adjust needles/hook sizes as necessary to obtain correct gauge.

Notions: 6 locking stitch markers (you must be able to unlock them as well!): 2 in color X, 2 in color Y, 2 in color Z, for marking the positions of the feet and ears (3 shades of waste yarn work just as well), one large stitch marker (to fit on U.S. size 13 (9 mm) needles, one tapestry needle, one 5/8 in (1.5 cm) button (optional), sewing needle and thread (optional).

Gauge: 10.5 stitches and 12 rows = 4” x 4” (10 cm x 10 cm) in stockinette stitch, worked flat, on U.S. size 15 (10 mm) needles, not blocked.

Finished Measurements, once sewn together: The scarf is 36 in (91.5 cm) long from nose to tail. It is 7 in (18 cm) wide at its widest point. The ears stand 2 in (5 cm) tall. The front feet are 7 in (18 cm) long; the back feet are 8 in (20 cm) long.
