Francie Nolan’s are part of Big Apple Knits.

One of my favorite memories as a child was walking down to Taylor Memorial Library with my friend, Mary to pick out books to read. It was there on one of our trips that I happened upon A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith. It was summer and there was no school so I was able to read and reread it before it was due back at the library.

When I decided to do Big Apple Knits I wanted to do a sock based on Francie Nolan, the book’s heroine. Carolyn at Tale and Tendril agreed to dye yarn especially for this sock. I am so pleased with the result.

I have the socks knit and I can tell you they have a leaf pattern. You’ll have to wait and see what they look like. In the meantime you might want to read the book. It’s a wonderful story and Francie’s passion for reading and education has stayed with me all these years.
