Grain Field is an elegant, rectangular wrap with exquisite lace patterning created from traditional Estonian lace stitch patterns. Grain Field is light yet warm and the perfect size for wearing in a multitude of ways. The spectacular lace was designed to reflect the farming landscape, where ordered fields of grain are enhanced by hedgerows and areas where wildflowers are allowed to bloom. In this design, the flowers take centre stage in the middle of the shawl.

This fabulous lace stole is worked in two pieces, joined at the mid-line by either grafting or with a three-needle bind-off. Each part starts with a knitted cast-on using doubled yarn. The lace edge is worked, followed by the main pattern, ending at the centre of the wrap. The Estonian Lace patterns used produce a light, airy fabric including nupps and gathered stitches. While the pattern looks complex, once established it has sufficient structure to make it predictable to work. Patterning occurs on both right-side and wrong-side rows; on wrong-side rows stitches are limited to knit, purl, slip stitches and purling 7 nupp stitches together.

Instructions are included if a shorter wrap is preferred.
Grain Field is knitted in Susan Crawford’s Marilyn, a luxurious 2 ply lace weight yarn, created from a blend of 55% Merino wool and 45% Silk which produce a fabulously soft fabric with a beautiful drape. The yarn is hand dyed in-house at Susan Crawford Vintage in a small but stunning range of rich, jewel like shades, including the gorgeous shade shown here which is Blue Angel. The yarn can be purchased separately or as a kit either with or without a printed version of the pattern included.
A blocked 26-stitch by 12-row repeat of the Grain Field Chart B Pattern measures 12cm / 4¾in wide and 4cm / 1½in deep.
Yarn requirements are for the weight of yarn and number of repeats stated at the given gauge. Information is included in the pattern to allow adjustment of stole length, which may also be useful if you use an alternative yarn weight and/or gauge.
