Halloween started as a Celtic festival called Samhain, over 2000 years ago. The symbol of Jack of the Lantern comes from a man, who tricked the devil and therefore was condemned to spend his days roaming the Earth with a lantern. As a symbol of Halloween, black cats were considered evil omens, suspected of being creepy comrades of wicked witches or even shape-shifting witches themselves. Luckily, there’s little chance of your precious night’s sleep being unsettled by this cheeky knitted black cat transfiguring back to a spooky sorcerer or your jack-‘o-lantern witlessly wandering through the night!

The 10 cm black cat and 5 cm jack-‘o-lantern were made on 2 mm double pointed needles (UK 14, US 0) in different shades of Scanfil mending wool; for the cat a strand of Drops Brushed Alpaca Silk (16) was added for a fluffy look. These fast and fun projects ask for some intarsia color work, working flat and in the round, some wrap-and-turns and making some i-cords.

Have a harmonious Halloween! Viv
