Mesmerized by rich, overgrown moss and the jagged intersections of bark breaking through soil, I created the shorty socks, Heerlen.

I thought the clean lines of twisted rib and lush seed stitch pattern would be great not just for feet but hands too - so plans for Heerlen Mittens started brewing!

Thick mittens are a great quick knit but for those of us who have to weather colder, windier winters, those thick mittens can leave some pretty big gaps for cold air to rush in. That’s when I thought a delicate, soft alpaca lining would be perfect to complete these toasty mittens!

SIZES

Child S (Child L, Adult S, Adult M, Adult L)

Sample knit in Adult S. See photos for Sizing Table. Choose size based on hand circumference, as length can be easily adjusted.

CONSTRUCTION

The mittens are knit from the cuff up and textured with an arrow shape and seed stitch. The mitten has a thumb gusset and is finished with a rounded tip.

If you choose to add the soft inner lining for extra warmth, it’s worked last, when outer layer is finished. Stitches are picked up from the outer layer and the inner layer is completed, mirroring the outer layer. To finish, the inner layer is folded inwards.

PATTERN TECHNIQUES

  • Classic Long Tail (or Old Norwegian/ German Twisted) cast-on method
  • Backwards Loop cast-on method
  • Knitting in the round
  • Twisted stitches (knitting through the back loop)
  • Reading charted instructions
  • Increases: make 1 left/ right
  • Decreases: knit 2 together, slip-slip-knit
  • Grafting stockinette with Kitchener Stitch
  • Picking up stitches

LINING fingering-weight yarn. Suggest using soft and fuzzy yarns for extra comfort.

See photos for yardage details.
